LAGOON AGIOS MAMAS - HALKIDIKI

Wetlands, those who have not completely degraded by man, full of life. Particularly remarkable is the abundance of aquatic birds that find their places for breeding, nesting, feeding and resting. Many of the species are migratory and protected directly or indirectly by international conventions (eg Ramsar, Bern, Rio) and European Directives (p.ch.79 / 409 / EEC on wild birds). Also, many wetlands are protected by national legislation, the Ramsar Convention and included in the European network of protected areas Natura 2000.

The lagoon of Saint Mamas in Chalkidiki is a "Site of Community Protection" and "Special Protection Area" Natura 2000 code GR1270004. The lagoon is located near Agios Mamas in the area of Nea Moudania and occupies an area of 6.332 acres. The water is brackish lagoon, vegetation low and the area presents a picture of a sandy heath. The wetland fed, bred and wintering many remarkable birds. Features are also some mammals, reptiles and amphibians. The lagoon is threatened by the reduction of water due to drought, the overexploitation of groundwater, the construction of roads and houses.

Type wetland:Offshore periodically flooded salt marsh-salt water.

Biotic features: three ponds with brackish water from which the two are natural depressions of the soil and the third a ditch that in old times joined Marsh and sea, in the canal of Potidaea. At the seaward developed extensive dune system length 3.5. And width 120-250m. Which is formed by the action of marine currents and wind. The State receives the waters of the wider catchment area and the subsurface seawater intrusion.

Vegetation: a) vegetation dunes and sandy beaches: thistles, velvetleaf, spurge, a solution of ethyl, straw, thorn, sea lily, b) imialofytiki-halophytic vegetation: thrifts, armyrithra, halimione portulacoides, salsola soda, suaeda maritime, aeluropus litoralis c) vegetation wet meadows: rush, straw, limonium gmelinii, d) vegetation agriokalamo reeds, straw. In parts of the peripheral zone of the wetland are arable crops.

Fauna: Birds: Barbara, Stilt, Avocet, Eurasian stone-curlew, collared pratincole, Mediterranean Gull, mafroglarono swan, flamingo.

Important current values: ranching, scientific, recreational, educational.

Uses: grazing, recreation, tourism.

Cause changes: embankments, establishing new settlements or expansion of old, over-pumping, installation or extension Stables-farms, illegal or wasteful hunt.

Important positive effects: reference to international-European list of habitats-wetlands (important area for bird ICBP- IWRB), planning and regulatory studies, ecological studies and surveys
